If you love the thrill and convenience of skateboarding, you can take your experience to a whole new level with an electric skateboard. Planning to try out one for the first time can be daunting at first, but it can be a worthwhile experience. With practice and determination, you’ll master riding an electric skateboard safely and with ease in no time.

What’s An Electric Skateboard

Although an electric skateboard looks strikingly the same as a regular one, it has distinct features you need to be familiar with.

An electric skateboard is equipped with an electric board with one or more battery-powered motors. Today, street skateboards are available in various designs, and you can readily find one that suits your needs. In most models, it has a remote control that controls the maneuvers.

Others feature a light-emitting diode (LED) display showcasing the speed, riding mode, battery level, and many more.

When it comes to speed, an electric skateboard is faster than a regular skateboard. It makes it easier to go through uphill terrain and allows you to travel longer distances. However, since an electric skateboard is equipped with electrical components, it makes the board slightly heavier, doing tricks challenging to perform.

Although riding an electric skateboard is a fun and thrilling activity, whether for recreational or travel purposes, it’s crucial to make safety the main priority. If you’re new to riding, enrolling in a skate school can help you learn proper techniques and safety practices before hitting the road.

Valuable Tips On Riding Your Street Electric Skateboard Safely

Whether you’re just trying it out for the first time or are already an expert in skateboarding, always prioritize safety when riding an electric skateboard. Enumerated below are some of the tips you can keep in mind in the name of your personal safety.

Wear The Right Protective Gear

One of the safety essentials when riding an electric skateboard is wearing the proper protective gear. Since electric skateboards move faster than regular ones, wearing the right gear can help prevent serious injuries, especially if it’s your first time. Generally, your gear should include a well-fitting helmet, elbow pads, wrist guards, and knee pads.

When riding an electric skateboard, the right footwear is important. Avoid wearing open or loose shoes. You could damage your toes and toenails if you do this. It’s best to wear flat shoes with a comfortable grip to ensure comfort and safety. Additionally, it ensures you have better control of the board.

Inspect The Truck And Settings Routinely

The trucks in an electric skateboard have two metal components that attach to the base of the deck, usually at the front and back. Check if the trucks are secure to help maintain better balance and minimize wobbles to ensure safety during your ride. Once your skill level goes up, you can loosen them slightly for flexibility and allow you to take on sharper turns.

Know everything about your remote as well. Depending on the board you have, each has distinct modes and speed settings. If you’re a beginner, starting with the lowest mode is best until you can move on to the next level.

Observe The Proper Falling Technique

In skateboarding, it’s normal to fall several times, especially if it’s your first time. This is why having the right protective gear is important. As you continue to practice and get used to maneuvering the board, the frequency of your falls will likely lessen. If you want to lessen the chance of injury every time you fall, ensure you know the right technique.

You can practice by positioning a thick mat or old mattress where you’re practicing. It’ll serve as your cushion every time you fall. The constant falls will allow you to practice the right falling technique. Remember that electric skateboards move faster than regular ones, so make sure to fall correctly.

During your fall, try to position your body so you’ll land on the fleshy parts instead of the bones and joints. An injury to your muscles is a relatively minor one and heals faster compared to ending up with joint or bone injuries.

Maintain The Right Posture Or Stance

An insightful tip to keep in mind when riding an electric skateboard is maintaining the right posture or stance. The main point is to be comfortable during the ride. Although it can be intimidating at first, practice will greatly help.

Avoid being stiff since it can make it hard for you to maneuver the board. Having the right posture allows you to stand comfortably on your board while also feeling confident in balancing. The ideal position is a slightly upright and balanced posture.

While riding, try to maintain a slight bend on your knees to allow you to balance. Make sure to engage in skateboarding practice regularly to find the right posture that works best while riding an electric skateboard.

Final Thoughts

Falls will always be part of riding an electric skateboard, but regular practice will help. These valuable safety tips will serve as your guide if you want to minimize your chances of injuries. Riding an electric skateboard is an exciting and convenient mode of travel, but safety is always the priority.
