The biggest sports event on the US calendar is on the horizon, with the Seattle Seahawks set to clash with the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LX. The game takes place on Sunday, February 8, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Right now, the Super Bowl game odds from DraftKings favor Seattle by 4.5 points, but we know that NFL history doesn’t always follow the script. The two teams met before at the 2015 Super Bowl, with New England getting the win in a thriller. But where will the game be won and lost this time? Let’s take a look at the key aspects:

A Plan for Seattle’s Offense?

The Patriots’ defense was excellent throughout the Playoffs and the latter part of the regular season, holding opponents to 10 points scored or fewer in four of the last five games. The Seahawks provide a different challenge, however, and it’s a big conundrum. The first order of business will be somehow containing Seattle’s passing game, most exemplified by WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The Patriots’ front 7 has seen success in neutralizing attacks all season. They will need to be at their best again.

Maye to Deliver an MVP-level performance?

Drake Maye was one of the best quarterbacks in the league across the regular season, putting in a brilliant showing across his second year in New England. In the Playoffs, it’s been a different story. He hasn’t been bad – not at all – just more subdued in games where his chances of starting attacks have been limited. He is, key, however, to the Patriots’ chances, and that is a huge demand on a 23-year-old in his first NFL postseason.

Sam Darnold to Find Redemption?

Up until last season, one would describe Sam Darnold’s NFL career as a journeyman one. He won 21 games across six seasons with three different teams before delivering a Pro-Bowl level campaign for the Vikings in 2024. Now in Seattle, he has found a natural fit, looking even better as the responsibility of leading the Seahawks in the Playoffs was thrust upon him. He has embraced it, and it feels like he has the pieces to complement him more so than Maye. It could be his moment, and that seems strange when you consider how he was struggling as a backup quarterback in San Francisco just two seasons ago.

The Battle of the Head Coaches

Mike McDonald has been in the job for two seasons, whereas Mike Vrabel is just completing his first season with the Patriots. Both are becoming adored by the fanbases after transforming their teams from below-average performers to Playoff contenders in mere months. A low-scoring game, one suspects, will play into Vrabel’s hands, as he is comfortable grinding out results. McDonald is an innovator, but one who is perhaps not infallible to getting it wrong.  A free-flowing, attacking game will play into his hands. Both coaches will have huge decisions to make after seeing the flow of the early action.

The Occasion of Super Bowl LX

In the previous three seasons, these two teams have played one Playoff game between them (Seattle’s exit in the Wild Card Round in 2022). While it’s a rematch of the 2015 Super Bowl, the vast majority of these players and, indeed, the coaching staff have not experienced a game of this magnitude. While we don’t think players will choke, as such, it’s still the case that the team that manages the occasion, the pressure, will win.
