You can’t beat the simple effectiveness of air hockey when it comes to fun games at the arcade. It’s usually considered a fantastic game for beginners and an excellent 1v1 game for couples that enjoy heading to the arcade now and again. However, did you know that there are a few tips and tricks you can pick up to get much better at the game?

It’s not often something people consider, but air hockey can be fun if you put more of a competitive spirit into the game. It gets even better when you encourage family and friends to do the same, which could lead to quite a few intense matches and a good time in general. First, of course, you’ll need to learn air hockey rules, but once you’ve got the hang of how things work, here’s how you can improve your game!

Learning to Control the Field with Your Grip

When holding onto an air hockey mallet, the first thing to consider is your grip. The way these mallets are shaped, it’s almost apparent how they want you to grip the mallet. However, you’ll find that some of the most experienced air hockey players hold their mallets differently. Instead of grabbing the part that sticks out at the center, they let their fingers rest on the grooved sides, putting more control on your fingers and giving you a much better grip overall.

You’ll still have to get used to the grip, but once you start getting the hang of things, it’s surprisingly easy to control the air hockey field with a proper grip. It’s the reason why you’ll see players wrap the tape around the center of the mallet, as it gives their fingers more control.

Employing the Triangle Defense

The triangle defense in the world of air hockey involves placing the mallet just a little bit above the goal, allowing you to block the three most common shots that people take during an intense game of air hockey. You’ll be in a much better position to block from the front, as well as have an easy means of blocking the left or right sides—especially if you’re using the finger grip.

Understanding the Three Common Shots

Concerning air hockey offense, learning about the three common shots gives you insight when it comes to defense and makes you that much more effective with offensive tactics. The straight shot is generally straightforward, as you make a straight shot to the goal. The angle shot involves knocking the puck to the side to try to enter the goal through an angle. The bank shot involves more skilled play, where you try to get the puck behind the opponent’s mallet.

An understanding of the three common shots can lead to an easy victory for most players.

Taking the above tips into consideration will help you improve your air hockey game, ensuring you give everyone a run for their money! Of course, it still takes practice to get better at air hockey, so make sure you practice as much as possible to accomplish your goals.
