There continues to be a huge investment in soccer from the Middle East as Saudi Arabian clubs look to ensure that the Saudi Pro League is one of the most exciting in the world. There has been no shortage of players making the move to clubs in the region, with the floodgates being opened following Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to move to Al Nassr, ending his long stay at the top of the game in Europe. However, another former Champions League winner could move to the Middle East this summer, with Raphael Varane lined up by Al Nassr.

Varane Offered Mega-Money Deal

Saudi Arabian clubs have made huge offers to European players, hoping to tempt top stars to the Middle East. However, Varane is reportedly open to a transfer to Saudi Arabia after falling down the pecking order at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag. The deal could also suit United, who are keen to ship out several players this summer to help finance Ten Hag’s rebuild. Varane is one of several players the club hopes to sell to Middle Eastern clubs. The Red Devils are reportedly open to allowing Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, and Antony to depart on mega-money deals to Saudi Arabia.

The reports claim Varane could be offered £50 million a year to reunite with Ronaldo in the Middle East. Ronaldo’s impact on Middle Eastern soccer has been substantial since he joined Al-Nassr in January 2023, quickly becoming a favorite for online football betting in the Middle East. Ronaldo’s presence has lifted the team’s game and earned him widespread admiration from fans throughout the Middle East.

Defender Achieved Everything In European Game

One of the reasons behind Varane’s interest in a move to the Middle East is because he has achieved everything that there is to win in the European game. The defender joined Real Madrid in 2018 after just one professional season in the sport with Lens.

Varane enjoyed a stellar ten-year stay at the Bernabeu, furthering his reputation as one of the world’s best defenders. He is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders of his generation and was a formidable part of the Los Blancos team that enjoyed esteemed success across all competitions.

The defender won La Liga three times during his stay in Madrid and was a key team member that won the Champions League four times. Varane left Madrid in 2021 to sign for Manchester United after winning 18 major trophies at the Santiago Bernabeu. Since joining United, he has added further silverware to his cabinet, winning the EFL Cup in 2023 under ten Hag.

World Domination

As well as enjoying an excellent club career, Varane was also an ever-present for France throughout his career before announcing his international retirement in 2023. The defender was part of the dominant French setup that won the FIFA World Cup in 2018, while he was also a regular for his nation once again as they reached the World Cup final in 2022.

Varane would also win the UEFA Nations League during his international career in 2021. His performances for France would see him named in the World Cup Fantasy Team and World Cup Dream Team in 2018. The 30-year-old played 93 times for France between 2013 and 2022, scoring five goals. However, he announced his retirement from international duty following the previous edition of the World Cup, citing fitness reasons for his decision.

Conclusion

Given that Varane’s best days are likely behind him now, and his injuries are beginning to impact some of his strongest traits, it would make sense for him to accept a huge payday to move to the Middle East. The defender has struggled for regular game time at Man United this season, with Ten Hag keen to give younger players an opportunity in his team.

Due to that, Varane sat on the bench for a long period in the 2023-24 season before recently reclaiming his spot in the starting eleven due to an injury sustained by Lisandro Martinez. However, United will be willing to part ways with the World Cup winner this summer, as a new central defender ranks high on their potential targets when the transfer window opens. It’s unlikely that there will be a lot of European interest in the defender, as injuries have meant that he cannot reach the speeds he did during his time at Real Madrid. Therefore, a move to the Middle East could suit all parties.
