The preparations to this event have been lasting for several years, and now, there are certain clarifications that deserve our attention.

FIFA’s First Decisions

The next FIFA World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19, 2026. For the first time, it will be hosted by three countries at once – the USA, Mexico, and Canada. The number of participants will also be a record in the football history – 48 national teams. The World Cup is still two years away, and we already have the first record and unprecedented news about the football greatest event that awaits us.

FIFA has chosen the venue for the 2026 World Cup finals. The decisive match will take place at the “Metlife Stadium” in the American state of New Jersey.

The 2026 World Cup will be held in 16 cities: 11 American, three Mexican and two Canadian. Starting from the 1/4 final stage, the games will be played only in USA stadiums.

Three stadiums applied for the World Cup 2026 final, which will be held on July 19: in Dallas, Los Angeles, and New Jersey. As a result, FIFA chose “Metlife Stadium,” which is located 8 km from New York City. The arena is so huge that it holds 82,500 spectators.

Two National Football League (NFL) teams – the New York Giants and the New York Jets – play home games at MetLife Stadium. This stadium was opened in 2010 on the site of the dismantled Giants Stadium.

The opening match of the 2026 World Cup, with the participation of the Mexican national team, will be hosted by the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, and the third-place match will be hosted by the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Dallas won the most matches of the tournament: nine games will be played at AT&T Stadium, which is the largest stadium in Dallas.

What Is Known So Far?

The World Cup 2026 is in the stage of active preparation. Many current and subsequent football matches determine the participants of the tournament. Hence, many matches are still decisive for national teams. The main information that is currently known may be summarized in the following points:

  • The 48 participants in the tournament will be divided into 12 groups of four teams. The two best national teams from each group, as well as the eight best third-place winners, will advance to the playoffs.
  • Also, due to the increase in teams, 6 matches will be played during one game day, and the total number of matches at the 2026 World Cup will become a record 104. Because of this, the tournament will last for six weeks.
  • The playoff stage will expand from 16 national teams to 32. They will start the relegation matches from the round of 16.
  • The USA national team will play its first home match of the 2026 World Cup in Los Angeles, and Canada will open the tournament with a game in Toronto.
