Nowadays, football has become a truly universal game. During the last World Cup held in Japan and Korea in 2002, experts recorded 28.8 billion television tune-ins. This means that each of the 6.2 billion inhabitants of the Earth, according to statistics, observed the final tournament more than four times. However, the impact of football goes beyond just media coverage; it encourages people all around the world to participate in various competitions.

The total amount of football players worldwide is estimated at 242 million, which corresponds to 4.1% of the world’s population. With 207 member associations, FIFA’s reach is even broader than that of the United Nations. It sounds impressive but the facts speak for themselves.

The global appeal of football raises essential questions: When has this kind of sport become so beloved? What underlies the game’s popularity? What are the social, economic, political and cultural conditions that have contributed to its successful spread? This article presents two historical explanations. First, it explores how football was put on a rational organizational basis in its homeland, England, allowing this model to be replicated everywhere. Second, it examines the influences of the rich history of the twentieth century on contemporary football, and how these transformations have affected the game’s dynamics.

The Historic Background of Football

Authors of both classic and contemporary books on football assure their readers that the game is as ancient as humanity itself, citing countless predecessors from pre-industrial folk cultures. Bright examples include calcio, the game enjoyed by the Florentine nobility during the Renaissance, kalagut of the Eskimos; Russian lapta’ Japanese kemari and Swiss hornussen. In England, the birthplace of modern soccer, the game was already being played in the pre-industrial era. However, whether these traditional examples are connected to contemporary football is a question that requires a detailed explanation.

On October 23, 1863, representatives from the football teams of aristocratic public schools and the universities of Oxford and Cambridge gathered in the Freemasons’ Tavern in London to unify the highly divergent rules of their schools. They wished to create standardized conditions so that teams would play matches against each other without the need to agree on the rules before each match. The result of this meeting was not only the establishment of mandatory rules of the game but also the founding of the Football Association (FA), which was to act as a supervisory body and had a monopoly on interpretation in disputed cases. This day can be considered the birthday of modern football, as these measures laid the groundwork for its successful evolution.

From England to the World

The global appeal of English football, under the guidance of the Football Association (FA), extended far beyond its homeland. This global exchange was facilitated by a technological advancement of the industrial age – the modern steamship. This mode of transport, which emerged in the 19th century, contributed to the fact that European transatlantic travel reached an unprecedented scale, and the communication between England and the European continent enhanced greatly.

The game of football was also spread by merchants, bankers, and industrialists, along with their managers, who opened branches in Europe and transatlantic countries to take advantage of cheap labor. British engineers and technicians who constructed gas and water pipelines and other infrastructure in European metropolises, as well as students who received education at technical universities in Germany and Switzerland, also played an important role in expanding football beyond the British Isles.

International love for football has created a universal demand for betting. Present-day online bookmakers, such as Mostbet giris, offer a plethora of betting options for diverse kinds of sports, including football.

Modern Football: The Latest Trends

Modern football places high demands on individual players and their level of expertise. It is necessary to find more advanced and progressive organizational forms, methods and means of preparation. This, in turn, requires a high level of knowledge, skills from the coach, and a scientific approach to sports training, as the ultimate result depends on these factors.

Smart clothing items such as gloves, socks, swimsuits, shorts, shirts, pants, and bras are typically made from advanced textiles with interwoven circuits, sensors, and additional hardware. Depending on the item and its purpose, this smart clothing can collect all sorts of data such as running speed, muscle activity, breathing rate, heart rate, temperature, step count, calories burned, stress, and many other metrics crucial for soccer.

One of the main trends in modern football is the increased speed of the game. Teams strive to play faster and more aggressively to gain an advantage over their opponents. An important role is played by the physical training of football players, which has become a key aspect of modern football.

Another trend is the increasing role of tactics and strategy in the game. Coaches and analysts pay great attention to studying opponents and developing tactical schemes. This allows teams to play more effectively and achieve better results.
