What’s your favorite sports team, and how far would you go to defend them?

The numbers show that in 2023, nearly 40% of Americans reported following sports, with around 7% self-identifying as superfans. And the viewing numbers back this up. Big events like the Super Bowl draw over 120 million viewers and millions follow the Premier League.

It’s not just a love for entertainment, though. These fan numbers reflect deep psychological needs, which range from belonging to identity reinforcement. Fans become emotionally attached to their chosen sports teams, experiencing teh highs and lows as if they were also on the team.

This article explores the psychology behind fan loyalty and what it means for sports betting.

Meeting Basic Psychological Needs

Dr. Dan Wann, a leading researcher in sports psychology, found that fandom goes further than being a hobby and fulfills several core human needs.

For instance, being part of a sports fan community provides social connection and reduces loneliness. It also becomes a place for fans to express their individuality and create a sense of self.

Jonas Kyllönen, Online Casino & Sports Betting Expert at Mr. Gamble, explained that “These benefits are seen in all areas of sports fandom, from international club fan clubs to hometown college football viewers. All fans get a sense of meaning and excitement from tuning into the games with others, making it a significant psychological experience.”

Here are the main psychological motivations and their base descriptions.

MotivationDescription
BelongingFeeling part of a group or community
ExcitementEnjoying suspense, competition, and unique events
IdentityExpressing individuality and personal values
Player InfluenceAdmiring a favorite athlete or role model

Emotional Investment and Coping

When researching the psychology of fan loyalty, one topic comes up more than others — the range of emotions felt while watching a team’s performance.

For example, team losses can trigger genuine frustration or sadness, and yet fans return game after game, even with the risk of these negative emotions. This resilience is incredible. And it also hints that their coping strategies are excellent, whether they know it or not. Said strategies usually include looking forward to future victories or cherishing past wins.

Sports betting adds another layer to the emotional turmoil. Playing a wager gives fans a real stake in outcomes. However, you must be responsible when sports betting, and always compare trusted football bookies to find a legitimate site before you begin.

Underdogs and Safe Bets For Fans

While we see the same behavior in fan groups, each individual person has different preferences. Some fans root for underdogs while others prefer favorites, and then others simply choose their home team.

All of the choices provide psychological safety. So, supporting a favorite minimizes regret if the team loses. In contrast, cheering for an underdog offers a high-reward surprise with few risks of upset, as you’re used to them not coming out on top. And if you opt for a team in your region, your sense of local pride rises higher than any negative results.

Paavo Salonen, Online Casino & Sports Betting Expert at Mr. Gamble, stated that “No matter the fan’s reasons for supporting a team, sports betting brings another level of engagement to the viewing experience. And in sports betting, we’ve noticed that some fans aren’t placing blind bets on their team. If they think the opponent has a real chance to win, they’ll read the odds and do research, and maybe even bet on the other side.”

The Home-Field Advantage

How powerful is fandom? Extremely powerful, and not only for the psychology of fans.

Did you know that fans influence not only their own experience but also the game itself? Studies show home teams win more (known as Home Advantage) because officials, consciously or unconsciously, respond to crowd reactions more than usual. This literally means that fan presence can sway outcomes.

Also, when talking about home advantage, it’s true that teams tend to have extra confidence while playing at home. This is likely due to familiarity and the boost they get from having more of their own fans watching.

Positive and Negative Impacts

Most fans benefit from their devotion beyond giving them something to do outside of work. They often enjoy higher self-esteem, reap the rewards of social inclusion, and sometimes, even experience psychological health.

If we discuss the topic fairly, though, we must admit that there is a darker side. Aggression and obsession with the team can disrupt real-life relationships and well-being. Sure, extreme cases are rare, but they are still a factor that must be considered.

This is especially difficult when sports betting comes into the mix. Obsession can lead to overspending on wagers and can pose the risk of gambling addiction or financial harm.

Here’s a quick look at the positive, negative, and neutral psychological impacts of fandom.

Effect TypeExamples
PositiveHigher self-esteem, social connection, enjoyment
NeutralEmotional ups and downs from wins and losses
NegativeAggression, overconsumption, relationship strain

Last Thoughts

Fan loyalty is more than it seems for many sports fans all over the world, and betting is an extension of this interest. Always gamble responsibly and make sure to stay mindful when watching your favorite team play.
