In every business, understanding who your customers are and what they want is half the way to sustained success. That holds true even more in intensely competitive fields such as online gambling where players can easily find alternatives with just a few clicks. This industry has been growing vigorously over the past couple of decades, and with global expansion came the broadening of the user base. For this reason, traditional views on who is likely to use online gaming websites like WOOM.BET casino are not necessarily accurate in 2025.

To fully explain how the industry is segmented, we need to describe the most significant groups of players who significantly contribute to the revenues of iGaming companies.

First-time Users

Some people feel curious about online gaming and are motivated to try it out at least once. They may join a casino site and play there for a couple of hours or days before abandoning it for good. Such players are typically low-skilled and unlikely to spend big at an online casino, so it’s fair to ask how important they truly are to the long-term mission of gaming sites.

Indeed, first-time users directly account only for a tiny share of iGaming revenues. Still, it makes sense for online gaming providers to actively pursue them and offer them large incentives to sign up. That’s because some of those players might eventually start playing more frequently and migrate to a different segment. Effectively, attracting first-time players is a slow but steady way of gaining new members and turning them into dedicated customers.

Casual Players

There is a large category of players who partake in casino games and sports betting from time to time. Players from this group see gaming primarily as entertainment and don’t mind putting occasionally some money into their accounts. Many of these players remain active over a long period, but they rarely if ever spend a lot of time on the gambling websites.

Casual players gravitate towards simple games that can be played on a whim without too much strategic preparation. Some of them are opportunity-driven and respond well to promotional offers or newly launched games. Gaming operators are well aware of the importance of those users, who form the bulk of the membership on some websites.

Frequent Hobbyists

This group is similar to casual players in a sense that they approach the games as a form of fun, but those who belong to it usually love to gamble and are often quite good at it. For them, visiting a casino site is a regular activity and they may have access to multiple providers, switching between sites at will. However, they tend to keep the stakes low and to stick to well-known games that are at least partly skill-based.

Due to their active nature, players of this kind add a lot of volume to a gaming site. They are among the most dependable clients who appreciate value propositions and can sometimes act as voluntary promoters of the site, bringing their friends to the platforms they like. On the other hand, these punters can be quite demanding, as they study the conditions offered for each game and will only participate in games that promise fair returns.

Strategic Players & High Rollers

Players who are after a big payday are certainly among the most valuable customers for any iGaming company. This market segment is not too large, but it accounts for a lion’s share of the revenues for the operators. It consists of people who understand they have to put serious money at risk in order to win a large sum, and they generally don’t sweat losses too much for as long as they keep playing.

Some players from this group simply have deep pockets and can afford to play the odds and wait for their luck to turn. Others approach gambling more strategically and develop a system that can deliver the desired result with sufficient investment. In either case, they tend to quickly acquire VIP status on the sites where they play and that ties them closer to the operator. Of course, their loyalty can’t be taken for granted and providers must try hard to keep them logging in day after day.

Compulsive Gamblers

This is a highly problematic market segment that reputable gambling sites are trying to eliminate altogether or at least keep to a minimum. Compulsive gamblers take unnecessary risks and often play with money they can’t afford to lose. Most of them display clear signs of a gambling addiction and are not in full control over their actions, so profiting off of them is ethically unacceptable and frowned upon by the general public.

The trouble is that it’s not that easy to recognise which players have lost control and are spiraling deeper into debt with every bet they make. Their actions typically reveal numerous red flags, yet casino sites sometimes struggle to detect them due to high volume of traffic. Automated tools for monitoring transactions can help in this regard, while better websites have responsible gambling features available to help them. Still, compulsive play remains an issue that is damaging the industry reputation.
