The Collapse of the Hitler Olympics

In 1936, Jesse Owens, an African—American sprint star, won four gold medals at the Hitler Games in Berlin, refuting the Nazi theory that the Aryan race was superior to all others. Before the official start of World War II, Adolf Hitler hoped to use these Olympic Games as a demonstration of German strength and Nazi superiority.

His plans were thwarted on the field and in the world media, as Jesse Owens, a black American, dominated the 100, 200 meters, 4×100 meters relay, and long jump. Owens also managed to break or equal nine Olympic records and set three world records, destroying the racial hierarchy of the Olympic Games and humiliating Hitler.

Although Germany still won many medals, and Owens’ victories did not change the policy of American racism, his heroism helped pave the way for the civil rights movement after World War II.

Hungary‘s Victory in Water Polo

In 1956, the Olympic Games were held in Melbourne (Australia). Hungary won a brutal water polo match against the USSR after learning that an anti-Soviet uprising had been suppressed in Budapest, their capital. Aware of thousands of deaths and arrests after the Soviet invasion of Hungary, the Hungarian water polo team developed a strategic plan to provoke the occupation opponents into a fight.

When blood filled the water from kicks and punches from both sides, five players were thrown out, and the Hungarians comfortably won the game 4-0. This story was added to the list, which included significant events in sports.

Miracle on Ice

In 1980, in New York, a group of amateur hockey players from the United States defeated four-time professional gold medalists from the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. The Soviet team had many years of experience in international play, and the U.S. team was the youngest in the tournament.

The USA won the gold medal, beating Finland in the final game. Sports Illustrated magazine called “Miracle on Ice” the main sporting event of the twentieth century.

Olympic Refugee Team

In 2015, the International Committee created the “Refugee Olympic Team” to enable athletes from 68.5 million displaced persons worldwide to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games. In this way, the committee wanted to draw attention to the plight of these people, who were forced to leave their homes as a result of conflicts and in greater numbers than ever since the Second World War.

This refugee team inspired the world with the power of their human spirit and drew attention to the global refugee crisis.

Sports can both unite and divide. Such an international sporting event as the Olympic Games not only welcomed the best athletes in the world but was also accompanied by boycotts and symbolic protests, giving hope and inspiration. Sport has played an important role for all mankind in the struggle for civil and political rights.

The Emergence of Volleyball

William J. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Christians Association (YMCA, Holyoke, Mass.), decided to mix elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a new game for his business friends that would be less contact than basketball. He created the game volleyball. Morgan borrowed a tennis net and installed it at a height of approximately 196 cm from the floor so that the net was slightly higher than the head of a person of average height at that time.

During the demonstration of the game, someone drew Morgan’s attention to the fact that the players throw the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps “Volleyball” would be the most appropriate name for this sport.

Muhammad Ali: Boxing as a Show

Another fighter against racial prejudice was Cassius Clay or, as he is known all over the world, Muhammad Ali. It was this athlete who turned boxing into a show that fascinated even those who did not understand it at all. Ali created a phenomenon that was later called trash talk: before entering the ring, he insulted and egged on his rivals, knocking them out of a state of psychological balance.
