It’s finally that time of year again. No, not the holidays; we’re talking about college football season! In a little over a week, teams across the country will take to the gridiron to play for the chance at glory and a shot at the National Championship. So what should you be looking out for this season?

The biggest rule change for the 2022 season is that defenders can no longer lead with their helmets when making tackles. Additionally, overtime has been tweaked to reduce the number of ties. These are just a few changes that will impact this year’s college football season. Let’s look at some of the most important NCAA rule changes for 2022.

Rule Changes For 2022 Season

The 2022 season is quite different from the one we watched just a few years ago. Let’s look at some of the rule changes you should keep your eye out for. First, a few minor rule changes have been implemented to increase player safety. The first is that an injured player will have to exit the field of their own volition.

They cannot be assisted by a member of their coaching staff. This rule prevents teams from unfairly taking advantage of the injury timeout system. The second rule change for player safety is that all protective pieces must be a certain length. This is to prevent players from accidentally dislodging their pads during a play.

The final rule change we’ll look at is one that we’ve been hearing about since last season. Although it was first introduced in 2019, it will be enforced far more strictly in 2022.

Halftime Is Now 15 Minutes Longer

Halftime is now 15 minutes longer, giving teams more time to rest and prepare for the second half. This rule change has been in effect since the 2020 season. It was originally introduced to reduce the number of concussions suffered by players during the game. This new halftime rule could have an interesting impact on the way coaches strategize.

It’s thought that teams will now have far more time to come up with and implement their game-winning plays. On the other hand, the rule could have a positive effect on the health of players. This is because it gives medics a bit more time to diagnose and treat any injuries sustained during the game.

Instant Replay Will Be Used More Often

The instant replay system will be used more often this season. This is a rule change that was implemented for the 2020 season and will continue for the foreseeable future. New technology allows officials to make more accurate calls on the field. This rule change is designed to improve consistency in the way plays are officiated throughout the country.

It also allows officials to correct any big mistakes they make while calling a game. Although this rule change may be frustrating for fans, it should make the game fairer and accurately officiated across the board. As a result, it could see the end of many controversial calls.

Coaching Staff Limits Are Being Adjusted

The number of coaches that can be on the sideline has been reduced. This is a rule change that has been in effect since the start of the 2019 season. It’s designed to reduce the number of coaches who are standing directly on the field during play.

This rule change is also intended to reduce the risk of injury to these coaches. This rule change has been applied across all NCAA sports. For football, it means that the head coach, their position coach, and three other staff members will be the only people allowed on the sideline.

Another rule change for the coaching staff is that only one person will be allowed to stand in the coaching box during play. This is designed to prevent coaches from stepping into the field of play and getting in the way of players and referees.

Player Safety Is A Priority

Let’s take a look at some rule changes that are intended to make the game safer for players. First off, the use of the helmet as a weapon is now a penalty. This rule was introduced at the start of the 2022 season and will be strictly enforced. Additionally, the number of players allowed on the field has been reduced.

This is a rule change that was introduced at the start of the 2020 season. It’s designed to reduce the number of collisions that occur when two large groups of players collide on the field. Another rule change that was introduced at the start of the 2020 season is that the kicking team cannot line up inside the 25-yard line. This is to prevent the potential for injury when the kicking team is bunched up close to the returner.

Tackling Rules Are Changing

The tackling rules have been adjusted for the 2022 season. Players will be penalized for lowering their heads and making contact with an opposing player when tackling. This rule was introduced at the start of the 2022 season and will be strictly enforced. It’s designed to reduce the number of head injuries that players suffer while on the field.

This new rule will require football players to adjust their tackling technique to become effective again. Although tackling with the head down was never recommended, this new rule will require players to make a conscious effort to change their technique.

Summing Up

That brings us to the end of our article on the biggest rule changes for the 2022 college football season. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about some of the biggest rule changes and what they mean for the game.

The next three months are sure to be jam-packed with preseason polls, bowl game predictions, and plenty of water-cooler talk about the upcoming season.
