The British Open is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world. Since it’s inception in 1865, this championship has been held every year with only a handful of exceptions. Today, you can find some of the best players in the world here as they vie for what is often called “The First Major Championship of the Year.” Let’s explore more about this year’s tournament!

History

In 1859, with the aim of developing a tournament for those golfers who had not been fortunate enough to take part in the first British Open, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers organised a tournament. Twenty-two professionals and 22 amateurs played the event, which was won by Willie Park Jr., who beat Tom Morris Jr. by four strokes.
