History
In 1859, with the aim of developing a tournament for those golfers who had not been fortunate enough to take part in the first British Open, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers organised a tournament. Twenty-two professionals and 22 amateurs played the event, which was won by Willie Park Jr., who beat Tom Morris Jr. by four strokes.
In 1861, the British Ladies’ Golf Club was founded as the world’s first ladies-only golf club. Four years later, The R&A introduced a ladies’ championship alongside its open championship.
