It came out of nowhere when Jürgen Klopp announced his resignation from FC Liverpool in the summer of 2024 on January 26, 2024.

In an interview with the club, the German cited his reasons, namely the lack of energy after almost nine years at LFC. The crisis-ridden season of 2022/23 has left its mark.

Called Party Is Busy: Understanding the Implications

Jürgen Klopp will go down in the history books as one of the best managers Liverpool and the Premier League have ever seen. The following numbers and statistics underline how much Klopp and his coaching team have transformed the Reds and led them to success.

  • 2015/2016: Matches Played: 52, Wins: 23, Draws: 17, Losses: 12, Goals For: 87, Goals Against: 58, Win Percentage: 44%
  • 2016/2017: Matches Played: 47, Wins: 27, Draws: 11, Losses: 9, Goals For: 92, Goals Against: 47, Win Percentage: 57%
  • 2017/2018: Matches Played: 56, Wins: 31, Draws: 16, Losses: 9, Goals For: 135, Goals Against: 63, Win Percentage: 55%
  • 2018/2019: Matches Played: 53, Wins: 38, Draws: 8, Losses: 7, Goals For: 115, Goals Against: 38, Win Percentage: 72%
  • 2019/2020: Matches Played: 57, Wins: 41, Draws: 8, Losses: 8, Goals For: 117, Goals Against: 63, Win Percentage: 72%
  • 2020/2021: Matches Played: 53, Wins: 28, Draws: 13, Losses: 12, Goals For: 97, Goals Against: 55, Win Percentage: 53%
  • 2021/2022: Matches Played: 63, Wins: 46, Draws: 13, Losses: 4, Goals For: 147, Goals Against: 48, Win Percentage: 73%
  • 2022/2023: Matches Played: 52, Wins: 26, Draws: 12, Losses: 14, Goals For: 103, Goals Against: 67, Win Percentage: 50%
  • 2023/2024: Matches Played: 33, Wins: 23, Draws: 7, Losses: 3, Goals For: 79, Goals Against: 30, Win Percentage: 70%
  • TOTAL: Matches Played: 466, Wins: 283, Draws: 105, Losses: 78, Goals For: 972, Goals Against: 469, Win Percentage: 61%

The statistics mentioned above underscore how successful the seasons under Jürgen Klopp were. Only in his first season – when he took over the Reds in October after coach Brendan Rodgers was fired – did he not achieve a win rate of over 50 percent.

In four seasons, including the current one, his team won over 70% of all matches in a season. And that with over 50 games played per season.

Moreover, the Reds scored close to 100 goals per season, reaching a peak of 135 goals in 2017/18. With 56 games played, that means 2.4 goals per game! Suitable for a coach known for his entertainment factor.

With the above-mentioned Jürgen Klopp statistics, the 56-year-old is the most successful coach in terms of win rate in the club’s history. Klopp has won 60.7 percent of all his games, placing him ahead of the two absolute legends Kenny Dalglish (58.3%) and Bob Paisley (57.4%).

Average Points in the Premier League

  • Pep Guardiola: 286 games (100+), 2.34 points/game
  • Alex Ferguson: 810 games, 2.16 points/game
  • Jürgen Klopp: 317 games, 2.12 points/game
  • Roberto Mancini: 133 games, 2.05 points/game
  • Antonio Conte: 132 games, 2.03 points/game
  • José Mourinho: 363 games, 2.02 points/game
  • Arsène Wenger: 828 games, 1.96 points/game

As the only LFC coach, he could win the League, Champions League (/European Cup), League Cup, and FA Cup. However, Paisley is far ahead with 13 titles (!), followed by Dalglish and Shankly with six each. In the current season, he at least has the chance to win the only title that has so far eluded him: The Europa League.

Regarding points per game, Klopp is only behind Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson, placing him ahead of well-known names like Jose Mourinho or Arsene Wenger.

Moreover, only Manchester City has scored more points in the time Klopp was the coach of the Reds. Liverpool has 671 points in 317 matches, while Tottenham, in third place, has only 583 points. Manchester City’s 716 points, however, show again how strong the competition was.

How successful he was is also demonstrated by two more Jürgen Klopp statistics. He shares, with Pep, the longest winning streak in Premier League history. 18 consecutive wins from October 2019 to February 2020.

Longest Winning Streaks in the Premier League

  • Run: Oct 2019 – Feb 2020, Team: Liverpool, Coach: Jürgen Klopp, winning streak: 18
  • Run: Aug 2017 – Dec 2017, Team: Manchester City, Coach: Pep Guardiola, winning streak: 18
  • Run: Mar 2019 – Oct 2019, Team: Liverpool, Coach: Jürgen Klopp, winning streak: 17
  • Run: Feb 2019 – Aug 2019, Team: Manchester City, Coach: Pep Guardiola, winning streak: 15
  • Run: Dec 2020 – Mar 2021, Team: Manchester City, Coach: Pep Guardiola, winning streak: 15

The streak ended with a 0:3 loss at Watford amidst the Corona pandemic, in front of empty stands, at a point when LFC was practically already confirmed as champions.

That he elevated Liverpool FC to the top of Europe during this time is also evident from the values above. The Reds went 44 games unbeaten in the Premier League. Only surpassed by Wenger and his still legendary “Invincibles”.

Premier League: Games Unbeaten

  • Run: May 2003 – Oct 2004, Team: Arsenal, Coach: Arsène Wenger, unbeaten: 49
  • Run: Jan 2019 – Feb 2020, Team: Liverpool, Coach: Jürgen Klopp, unbeaten: 44
  • Run: Oct 2004 – Oct 2005, Team: Chelsea, Coach: José Mourinho, unbeaten: 40
  • Run: Dec 2001 – Oct 2002, Team: Arsenal, Coach: Arsène Wenger, unbeaten: 30
  • Run: Apr 2017 – Jan 2018, Team: Manchester City, Coach: Pep Guardiola, unbeaten: 30

What Guardiola’s ManCity was on the English stage, Real Madrid was on the international stage. Klopp failed against the Royals in the Champions League multiple times, twice even in the final.

Against only two teams in his LFC history (against whom he played more than once) does he have 0 wins, aside from Real Madrid and FC Sevilla. Both also defeated him in a European Cup final.

He faced Real six times, with only one draw. In comparison: He faced ManCity 24 times, with 10 wins and 8 draws! At least in direct confrontations, he seldom failed against Guardiola.

What more is there to say except: thank you, Jürgen?
