Since the Premier League first started, we have seen a whole host of thrilling finishes, most notably when Sergio Aguero won Man City’s first-ever Premier League title with virtually the last kick of the season.
However, although the drama of that season is unlikely to ever be matched, this year’s title race is already gearing up to be a classic, let’s take a quick look at some of the key talking points.
Liverpool
Heading towards the Christmas break, few would have believed at the start of the season that Liverpool would be out in front and at the top of the pile.
With Jurgen Klopp moving onto pastures new and Arne Slot unproven at the Premier League level, few saw the Reds as genuine title contenders, but how wrong we have been.
Having been left a great squad by his predecessor Slot has changed very little. Still relying on much of the same names that Klopp did, the spine of Liverpool’s team has been immense.
Virgil Van Dijk looks well and truly back to his greatest, Ryan Gravenbach has offered stability and control, whilst Mo Salah has proved yet again that he is an all-time Premier League great.
There will be tougher tests to come, but at the moment, Liverpool is the team to catch.
Chelsea
If Liverpool were surprise leaders, then it’s an even bigger surprise that Chelsea would find itself second.
Although the club has spent well over a billion pounds in rebuilding the squad, Enzo Maresca has settled into life at Stamford Bridge with ease and is doing a truly magnificent job of juggling Chelsea’s squad around.
Nicolas Jackson looks like a man reborn, Enzo Fernandez has been sensational in midfield, and with their abundance of wingers, the production from out wide has been incredible.
The man who makes them tick is Cole Palmer, and it’s imperative that the Englishman remains fit. However, Chelsea looks ready for the fight and could be this season’s surprise package.
Arsenal
Heading into this season, many felt that this was Arsenal’s title to win. Having finished second for the last two years, Mikel Arteta’s squad knows what it takes to take a title race right up to the wire.
Having been one of the most consistent sides in the Premier League in recent times, a mixture of injuries and a tough schedule which has seen the Gunners already travel to Chelsea, City, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Fulham has left the team six points off top spot.
Although they have ground to make, many still view Arsenal as the favorites, but they will have to go on a winning run. They have fallen short before, fans of the team will hope that isn’t the case yet again this season.
Man City
For those looking to take advantage of betting offers from the best sportsbooks, now could be an interesting time to place a wager on who might win the Premier League. Despite their recent struggles, Man City’s long-standing dominance, with six of the last seven titles to their name, makes them a tempting option for bettors looking for value. While their current form may not suggest it, sportsbooks still consider them strong contenders, and the odds could offer an attractive return for those willing to back them
However, behind the scenes, much of City’s woes have stemmed from injuries to key players like Rodri, and with several others—including Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku, and Jack Grealish—also sidelined, their path to another title is far from certain.
With City battling injuries and going on a run that saw them go winless in seven games, City has it all to do, and another title looks incredibly unlikely.
However, City have gone on winning runs before, and the intention will be for them to do so again.
With the margin of error now so small, if City were to win the Premier League this season, it would be one of Pep Guardiola’s greatest-ever achievements.
