It’s been another disappointing season for fans who go to the MetroLife Stadium to support the home team. Both the New York Giants and New York Jets have already been eliminated and won’t even be in the wild card play-offs. Can the final weeks of the season provide some consolation for the clubs?
After their first 13 games of the season, the New York Jets had a 3-10 record. That has taken them to third in the AFC East, ahead of the New England Patriots who have the same record. Their poor record means this will be the ninth consecutive losing season.
That’s the longest active streak in the league. It’s also the fifth straight season in which at least ten matches have been lost. The last time they avoided that sad statistic was in 2019 but they came close with nine losses.
There was some hope earlier in the season that better times might be just around the corner. The Jets actually won two of their first three matches with victories at the Tennessee Titans and at home to the New England Patriots.
It was a false dawn though and each of their next five games ended in defeat. Two days after their loss to the Indianapolis Colts in week 11, they fired their general manager Joe Douglas. By that time their record was 3-8, their other win coming at home against the Houston Texans in week 9.
Their main aim in the final weeks of the season is to try and avoid finishing bottom of the AFC East for the first time since 2022. They’d finished bottom of their division for three successive years before a third place last season with a 7-10 record.
Two of their final four matches are at home. They are due to host the LA Rams on December 22 and then in January, end their season with a match against the Miami Dolphins at the MetroLife Stadium on a date yet to be confirmed. On the road, the Jets travel to Jacksonville Jaguars (December 15) and their last away fixture of 2024 is against the Buffalo Bills on December 29.
Therefore they have to face the top two in the AFC East and so far the Jets have only had that one win against another side in their division. The away game at divisional leaders Buffalo on the 29th is unlikely to see the Jets enjoy a fruitful end to what has been another disappointing year for them. Their fans may end up getting more pleasure watching AFL games.
Betting on the NFL has become incredibly popular in recent years since it was made legal in New Jersey. Online operators in the state will be counting down the days to when the Super Bowl comes around. Massive amounts are wagered on what is one of the largest betting events in the world.
The favorites to win the Super Bowl are currently the Detroit Lions at +260 (odds subject to change of course) followed by the Kansas City Chiefs (+450) and Philadelphia Eagles (+500). Buffalo Bills are the fourth favorites to win the Super Bowl and have already won the AFC East.
With both the Jets and the Giants already eliminated, there are still other betting markets that wagers can be placed on but more based on failure than success.
There are odds on who will have the worst record in the NFL this season and the New York Giants head that market after just two wins in their first 13 matches. The Giants have lost their first seven home games this season at the MetroLife Stadium in Rutherford, New Jersey.
The holidays are on the way but will either the Jets or the Giants have anything to celebrate? Their combined win-loss record after week 13 was a rather miserable 5-21 and that 0.192 percent win record is the worst in over 60 years.
There are plenty of bets that can be placed that don’t actually require you to name the winner of the match. For example, the first player to score a touchdown or what the first scoring play will be. All very helpful when your side rarely wins a match.
With both teams unable to even claim a wild-card, the final weeks of the season will be about trying to salvage some pride. They’ll have to start building towards the next season and attempting to work out just what can be done to give them a better season next time around. A lot of hard work is on its way with success definitely not guaranteed.
