Lacrosse is one of those games that plenty of folks kind of sort of know about, but when pushed will struggle to answer even the most basic questions related to the sport. Aside from the usual questions of “What is lacrosse?” or “Is that the game that they play at Ivy League schools?” the most common tends to be how long is this game actually played for? Well, if that is the burning question that has been bugging you for all this time, you have likely stumbled upon the right post! We will discuss this initial question and then break down how the game is played and how long each process lasts.

Lacrosse Games Typically Last 60 Minutes

The length of a game can vary depending on the league and the age of competitors. However, when discussing lacrosse game duration for those of higher leagues or involving older participants, games tend to last around 60 minutes. However, this can vary depending on a range of factors. To simplify things a bit, games can last for the following amount of time:

  • High school games played by girls: 50 minutes split into two halves, each played for 25 minutes a piece.
  • Colleague games: 60 minutes, also with two halves divided into 25 minutes each.
  • Major League Lacrosse: Now we come to the more hardcore, where games are still played for 60 minutes, but thanks to the increased intensity, they will be split into four quarters that are played for 15 minutes each.

When you get into the higher leagues, the time variations between men’s and women’s leagues don’t differ, and both are played for the times stated above.

Games Are Divided Into Four Quarters

As stated, unless you are playing high school or college matches, games are typically divided into four quarters. This is generally thanks to the increased intensity of the matches, as they can involve running large distances and expending lots of energy in the process. These segments last 15 minutes each and will be separated by 2 minutes for the first and last quarters, with a 10-minute intermission during half-time. However, this will change for lower leagues and those playing high school or college girls’ matches, which will be separated into two parts, either lasting 25 minutes each for high school girls and 30 minutes each for college games of any gender.

Overtime Can Occur In Playoffs

Lacrosse games, particularly during the heated competition of playoffs, can stretch beyond their typical duration due to the possibility of overtime periods. Usually, a lacrosse game consists of four quarters, each lasting 15 minutes, which totals up to an hour of regulation play.

However, when a match reaches an equal score at the end of regulation, it triggers an overtime scenario to determine a clear winner. This extra time extends the game’s length and can vary depending on how many additional minutes are required to break the tie. Each overtime period is typically four minutes in sudden-death format, where the first team to score wins, but multiple overtimes can occur if the tie persists. All of this can make the games incredibly exciting and, regardless of the league you’re watching, can often add an additional feeling of thrill and enjoyment.

Half-time Intermission Usually Lasts 10 Minutes

If we’re speaking in generalities (because we have to, thanks to the mismatch in leagues), half-time events will tend to last around 10 minutes. This is often just enough time for players to regain focus and energy and for coaches and managers to reassess their strategy based on the current play. In many ways, these half-times are not too dissimilar to those of other sports, but as you might imagine, with such a fast-paced sport, they are short enough for play to resume promptly in order to give the fans what they want!

Youth Games May Have Shorter Durations

As you might have gathered from reading to this point, lacrosse games can be far more energetic than many people who are somewhat ignorant of the sport might believe. Consequently, this can have an impact on younger players who simply don’t have the stamina to play full-length games. Fortunately, youth games tend to have far shorter durations so that coaches can focus on ensuring younger players get to learn the technique rather than getting to play the full 50 or 60 minutes. How long are these youth games, you ask? Well, this will depend on where and when the games are played and how formal or informal the events are.

Lacrosse is a frantic game full of high-speed action and plenty of excitement. While there certainly is variation in game duration based on leagues, gender, and age, you can say that they generally last for 60 minutes and are split into four quarters.
