Spain has an abundance of sports teams and athletes, including many that have excelled in international competitions throughout the years. And even though soccer (or football, depending on where you live) is by far the most popular sport, there are quite a few other options to choose from if you’re looking to get fit and active while supporting your favourite local team or one of the big stars in world sports.

The following are eight of the most famous Spanish sports that Spaniards love participating in and watching.

Popular sports in Spain:

Football

Spain is one of the best-known footballing nations in history, having won both the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2008 UEFA European Championship. La Liga, Spain’s top football division, is also home to some of the world’s best players, like Lionel Messi.

Basketball

Spain has a long and successful history in basketball, both at the club and international level. The Spaniards won three consecutive Olympic gold medals (2008-2012) and back-to-back EuroBasket titles (2009-2011). Some of the most notable players to come out of Spain are Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, Ricky Rubio, Juan Carlos Navarro, and Serge Ibaka.

Tennis

Tennis is a hugely popular sport in Spain, with professional tournaments taking place all over the country throughout the year. Some of the most famous Spanish tennis players include Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer. They are both ranked within the top five of the ATP rankings and have competed against each other on many occasions. Both players have won a total of 4 French Open titles each, making them some of the best tennis players to come out of Spain.

Cycling

Spain has produced some of the world’s top cyclists, including Miguel Indurain, who won the Tour de France five times, and Alberto Contador, who has won it three times. The Vuelta an España is one of the most prestigious cycling races in the world and takes place every year in August.

Golf

Golf is one of the most popular sports in Spain, with a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. The sport is played on some of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the world, making it a favourite among professional and amateur players. One of the greats in this game was Seve Ballesteros, who won more than 60 titles worldwide. He helped make golf an international success for Spain. Other notable Spaniards include Sergio Garcia, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jose Maria Olazabal and Rafa Cabrera-Bello.

Handball

Spain’s men’s handball team is one of the most successful in the world, having won two World Championships and three European Championships. The sport is hugely popular in Spain, with passionate fans following the national and club teams.

Motorsports

Spain has a long and proud tradition of excellence in riding motorsports. Some famous Spanish sports include MotoGP, motocross, and enduro. Spain is home to many world-famous riders, including Marc Marquez, Jorge Lorenzo, and Dani Pedrosa. The country also hosts several major racing events yearly, such as the Catalan Grand Prix and the Valencia Grand Prix. Besides these two races, Barcelona’s historic Montjuïc street circuit is another favourite for Spanish riders and spectators alike.

Skiing

Spain is home to some of the best European skiing, with world-class resorts like Baqueira Beret and the Sierra Nevada. While not many Spaniards make it their profession, some of the nation’s top professional racers have won medals at World Cup events and other international competitions.

Traditional and Regional Sports in Spain:

Basque Pelota

Spain’s traditional and regional sport is played with a ball and paddle. The game is similar to squash or racquetball and can be played indoors or outdoors.

Valencian Pilota

This sport is played with your hand and a ball, and it is the national sport of Valencia. It is one of the oldest sports in Spain and is thought to have originated in the 12th century. It is a very fast-paced game and is usually played outdoors.

Valencian Frontó

A Valencian Frontó is a traditional Valencian sport that is similar to handball. The game is played with a ball and two teams of three or four players each.

Bull Fighting

Spain is one of the few countries where bullfighting is still prevalent. This sport dates back to 711 A.D., when the Moors first introduced it. Bullfighting is considered a national sport in Spain and occurs in cities across the country.

Calva

This sport is played with a ball and two teams of three or four players. The game aims to score goals by getting the ball into the other team’s net. This sport is popular in Spain as it does not require a lot of equipment and can be played in small spaces.
